IRONMAN Tallinn triathlon competitions will bring changes to traffic
On August 22-23, 2026, the IRONMAN Tallinn triathlon competitions will take place. In connection with the competitions, there will be changes in the traffic management and public transport schedules in Tallinn and its vicinity. Due to the new swimming location in Lake Raku, the courses have changed, and the IRONMAN competition track also covers new city districts.
IRONMAN Tallinn Project Manager Aire Veskimäe: “The organizers’ focus is on ensuring the safety of both participants and city residents. We are doing everything we can so that regulators and motorcycle security can help people move where they need to go if necessary.”
In connection with the competitions, parking and car traffic are limited, and public transport schedules have been changed. Pedestrians must also account for waiting times when crossing the tracks. All residents will be able to get home and leave their homes; the instructions of the traffic regulators must be followed.
Traffic restrictions
The first restrictions begin on August 14 at 8:00, when Mäekõrtsi street will be closed for the construction of the Rocca al Mare / Unibet Arena competition center. Starting from August 17, Karuse street and Sinirebase street in the Lake Raku area will also be closed for the construction of the transition area.
On August 20, IRONKIDS Tallinn and the Sunset Run will take place, which is why there are temporary restrictions in the Rocca al Mare and Stroomi beach area. We ask those moving in this area to follow temporary traffic signs and the instructions of traffic regulators.
On Saturday, August 22, traffic is closed as follows:
From 5:00 to 12:15 On Viljandi mnt on the section between Valdeku street and the Kangru traffic junction.
From 7:30 to 20:00 Paldiski mnt from Tuuleveski street to Tutermaa. The right lane of the outbound direction of Paldiski maantee between Vesiravila and Mõisapõllu streets will be closed until 2:30, including the following intersections: Paldiski mnt and Vabaõhumuuseumi tee, Paldiski mnt and Mõisa street, and Paldiski mnt and Mõisapõllu street.
On Sunday, August 23, traffic is closed as follows:
From 6:50 to 12:35 On Viljandi mnt on the section between Valdeku street and the Kangru traffic junction. From 8:35 to 16:35 Paldiski mnt from Tuuleveski street to Tutermaa. The right lane of the outbound direction of Paldiski maantee between Vesiravila and Mõisapõllu streets will remain closed until 19:45.
Changes on the Tallinn ring road on August 22-23:
The Tallinn ring road from the Kurna traffic junction to Välja tee is open to regular traffic on the landside carriageway 1+1, and for cyclists, the northern carriageway in the direction of Keila is closed. Cyclists will move from Kurna in the direction of Keila up to Välja tee, through which they will head further towards Paldiski maantee. From there on, the competition affects Paldiski maantee on the section from Tutermaa up to Tuuleveski street in the city of Tallinn.
On the section between Keila-Joa and Viti, traffic is managed by regulators in cooperation with motorcycle security. Local residents must account for a longer waiting time than usual.
Between the two competition days, the track is open to traffic, but we recommend being attentive to temporary traffic control devices while moving.
All restrictions are also visible in the Tark Tee and Waze applications. We recommend road users plan their journeys early, use detours, and follow the information on the organizer’s website, city channels, and traffic signs. We recommend parking vehicles beforehand in a place from which it is possible to move quickly on the competition day if necessary.
Traffic management and escort
The competition track is secured by traffic regulators and motorcycle security. Residents, emergency vehicles, and transport for local institutions will be let through according to the situation assessed by the regulators and the decisions and signals made. If necessary, the motorcycle security team will be involved for escorting.
If you end up on a closed road section:
Let the regulator know where you want to go. If the destination is on the other side of the track, wait for a permitting signal. If the destination is located along the track, you will be sent in the same direction as the competitors, accompanied by motorcycle security. Access to the track is allowed only if there is no other access.
NB!
On Saturday, August 22 from 12:00 to 16:00 and on Sunday, August 23 from 11:00 to 14:00, the cycling track will have the highest density of athletes, and during this time, crossing the road may take longer. Traffic will be opened immediately after the last competitor has passed and the traffic control devices have been removed.
We recommend planning drives outside this time period if possible. Also, if it is necessary to reach somewhere at a specific time, then if possible, park the vehicle in a place where you would not have to cross the track.
Public transport
